Summary: A young girl needs to spread her wings, but a young woman needs roots.

English teacher Sarah Bray never thought she’d return to Sycamore Falls, but a traumatic event at her inner-city school leaves her desperate for the sanctuary of home. By returning to her roots, an older and wiser Sarah hopes to deal with the demons of her present and confront the ghosts of her past.

She discovers a kindred spirit in Lucas Miller, a teacher from New York with demons of his own. They quickly become friends – bonding through Lucas’s culture shock and their mutual desire to build new lives. When they open their wounded hearts to each other, their friendship effortlessly evolves into romance.

Their love is put to the test when Matt, the quarterback of the football team, shares his deepest secret with Sarah. When the conservative community finds out, Sarah and Lucas – along with the town of Sycamore Falls – are schooled in the lessons of acceptance, tolerance, and love. (SOURCE)
After finishing my previous read I needed something different to move on to. Lessons was the perfect choice.

Sycamore Falls is the quintessential small town. Everyone knows everyone and there are very few secrets kept. Sarah moves back to her hometown after a horrible tragedy. She's a bit of a runner when faced with uncertainty. Sycamore Falls and the house her grandmother left to her are the perfect opportunity to protect herself.

When she meets Lucas Sarah tries not to become attached to him, but that is impossible. Lucas is the perfect guy. Sweet, handsome, caring and giving. He stands by Sarah through so much, it's evident he cares for her. I swooned-- a lot. In my mind, he looked like Chad Michael Murray. I don't know. Either way, he's a fab character. Both he and Sarah are actually. They were compliment one another so well. He is strong, she is compassionate and they share a love of teaching.

When Matt, who the town has always praised for his football skills, finally admits to a huge secret he's been keeping people start turning their backs on him. My heart really hurt for him. He is a great character and you see him go through so much. There are very few people that he can lean on. Even his relationship with his parents is strained.

There are a few characters that made me want to just jump into the book and shake them. Two of them in particular, were extremely frustrating.

Lessons Learned is full of strong characters and a story that a lot of people can relate to. Every one has struggles in their life-- these characters help each other to get through the rough times. Sarah and Lucas are one of those couples that make you smile and feel warm and fuzzy. Best of all, there's a happy ending! This book made me laugh, it made me cry... it touched all the emotions I love to feel when reading a book. I definitely recommend it.

I received Lessons Learned from NetGalley but that had no influence on my review. These are my personal thoughts on this book. If you have questions please feel free to contact me.
